LESSON:

  • EUROPE APPROACH PLATE
  • EUROPE TRANSITION ALTITUDES
  • TEARDROP ENTRY TO AN ILS

Approach Plate

for EHAM Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam (ILS 18 R)

Flight:

The red around "TA 3000" > This is your Transition Altitude. Where this airport starts the use of pressure altitude > you change your aircraft altimeter to 29.92 (1013 millibars). This will be listed at all airports in Europe, as each region will be different.

Navigation is up to you. GPS direct is fine. Altitude is up to you. Distance is 240 nm.

When approximately 40 DME South of Schiphol, proceed direct to SPL (108.4) > cross this fix at 7000 feet. Remember, you are still on an altimeter setting of 29.92.

Proceed outbound of SPL on the 339 Radial till the 12.1 DME fix, then turn right to join the ILS inbound (110.10).

When more than half way around in your turn > descend to be at 2000 feet by the FAF.

From here, commence a normal ILS approach.

Notes:

When going thru 3000 feet > change your altimeter setting to LOCAL.

Your roll-out on the teardrop will be more accurate if you maintain a constant rate of turn, and a constant airspeed...all the way around.

Welcome To Schipol Airport, Amsterdam. A beautiful place!
