I was reading an article in Flying magazine about a flight into Furnace Creek Airport in Death Valley (L06). It is 210 feet BELOW sea level! I was mentioning this to our morning flying crew and Larry found an interesting article on the net about the lowest 7 airports in the US (http://www.boldmethod.com/blog/lists/2014/10/7-lowest-civilian-airports-us/. Steve and I were looking for a place to fly, Steve has spent the week in foggy/cloudy Alaska. It was an easy decision to make a flight from the lowest city in the US to the lowest airport, we were pretty much guaranteed sunny skies!! What we didn't realize at the time is that our flight would take us over two of the other lowest airports. So in one flight, we touched four of the seven low spots in the US. I took screen shots of my altimeter in both places, they are in the photos below. I will be posting a video of my approach into Furnace Valley later this evening. The scenery was So Cal ORBX beautiful, Ultimate terrain mesh for all the gorgeous peaks and valleys. Active sky had an easy time of it with sunny skies, just what the doctor ordered for Steve's vitamin D deficiency!! So, not only can SPA pilots get high, we can also get down!!
Regards,
Scott
