Automated air traffic control center to be built in northwest Russia

KALININGRAD, February 21 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's first automated air traffic control center will be built in the northwest Kaliningrad Region, the air traffic watchdog said Monday.

The $16 million project to construct the air navigation center in Russia's enclave on the Baltic Sea has been designed to increase the capacity of Khrabrovo Airport and ensure flight safety.

"The federal authorities and the regional administration have worked for a long time on the construction of a modern air traffic hub at Khrabrovo Airport, which is to house a dual purpose automated air traffic control center for use not just by civilian aviation," said Alexander Neradko, head of the Federal Air Transportation Agency.

He said the new center, which is scheduled to be built by early 2010, would be followed by another 12 to replace the current 120 centers.

A spokesman for project contractor Almaz-Antei, a defense industry concern of over 40 enterprises, said the center will cover more than one and half hectares.

It will be serviced by two different geographically remote power supply sources and it will have a backup source capable of using diesel fuel and liquefied natural gas.
