LaPORTE, Ind. —

A man accused of stealing a twin-engine plane and driving it down the taxiway staged the stunt while he was drunk to impress his girlfriend, police said.

Michael Santos, 38, was charged Friday with theft, criminal mischief and operating a vehicle after his driving privileges had previously been forfeited for life.

Every pilot will lose all sense of direction, height and speed while flying at some point, and some will even feel as though they are sitting on the wing watching themselves in the cockpit, according to a report from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB).

The report said between 90 to 100 percent of aircraft pilots experienced “spatial disorientation” (SD) — one of the most common factors in plane crashes.

Aviation medicine specialist Dr. David Newman said pilots were commonly the victims of strange illusions that could be dangerous, and have been linked to between 15 and 26 percent of fatal crashes worldwide.

ATLANTA -- A new advertising campaign from Spirit Airlines has some tongues clicking.

The Fort Lauderdale-based airline, which specializes in flights to the Caribbean, is advertising a "Many Islands, Low Fares" special.

A limited number of flights to the Bahamas are as low as $9. Most of the flights included in the sale are in the $69-$89 range.
